魔女の宅急便

Happy 30th Anniversary to Hayao Miyazaki‘s masterpiece, Kiki’s Delivery Service, released in Japan by Toei Company, Ltd., on July 29, 1989! Animated by Studio Ghibli and based on the 1985 novel by Eiko Kadono, the film won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and was the highest-grossing film in Japan in 1989. The first official English dub of Kiki's Delivery Service was produced by Carl Macek of Streamline Pictures for Japan Airlines' international flights. Kiki was portrayed by voice actress Lisa Michelson. This dub is only available in the Ghibli Laserdisc Box Set. Kirsten Dunst voiced Kiki in Disney’s 1997 English dub, released in 1998. This dub was also Canadian-American comedian and actor Phil Hartman’s last voice-acting performance (as Jiji) before his death in 1998 and is dedicated to his memory. The film was re-issued by GKIDS on Blu-ray & DVD on October 17, 2017.

The NeverEnding Moon Landing

Sometimes I will deviate from Roger Rabbit posts with other topics which I am interested in. This is such an occasion.

Wolfgang Petersen's epic fantasy, The NeverEnding Story, was released to US theaters from Warner Bros. Pictures, OTD, July 20, 1984! Based on the novel by Michael Ende and featuring an iconic theme song by Giorgio Moroder & Limahl, the film performed very well at the box office, grossing US$100 million worldwide against a production budget of DM 60 million. It also won a Bambi Award (National film), Goldene Leinwand, Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor (Noah Hathaway), Brazilian Film Award (Best Production) and a Film Award in Gold (Best Production Design). It has since become a staple in popular culture.

In the film, Bastian names The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach) "Moon Child". Not only is it the 35th Anniversary of the film, but it's also National Moon Day and the 50th Anniversary of the United States' Apollo 11's (NASA) first crewed mission (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin & Michael Collins) landing on the Moon.
