20 Years of Shrek!
#TodayInMovieHistory May 18, 2001: Shrek, based on William Steig‘s 1990 fairy tale picture book, directed by Andrew Adamson & Vicky Jenson and starring Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow, Conrad Vernon, Cody Cameron, Vincent Cassel, Chris Miller, Jim Cummings & Kathleen Freeman, is released in theaters. It won the 1st ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film's success helped establish DreamWorks Animation as a prime competitor to Pixar in feature film computer animation, and three sequels were released—Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010)—along with two holiday specials, a spin-off film, and a stage musical that kickstarted the Shrek franchise. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", making it the first DreamWorks Animation film and the first animated feature not produced or distributed by Disney to earn that honor. 🧅 #Shrek20thAnniversary

L. Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919)
Happy 165th Birthday to the real Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919)! 🎂 Born and raised in upstate New York (Chittenango), the author, theater producer & playwright was best known for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 M-G-M adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema. His works also anticipated such later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of clothes advertising (Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work).
